The Wheel and The Lion: Navigating the Energies of August

Lion’s Gate is such a potent and beautiful time of year. This post talks about the current energies and using the Medicine Wheel as a tool to shift through this phase.

Today, August 8, is the day that represents the height of Lion’s Gate – and the point of mid-summer. Astrologically, Lion’s Gate takes place July 26 through August 12, though many feel its energies extended beyond these dates. This corridor of time represents prosperity and fertility. It also looks to physicality and strength – but through the lens of wisdom, love, and higher thinking. It is a powerful time of manifestation and can be enhanced by using powerful tools like the Medicine Wheel.

From the times of ancient Babylon, astrologers have connected the patterns of the heavens to various elements of life on earth. As above, so below. Our connection with celestial phenomena is a reflection of our connection with all of life.

The astrological sign of Leo currently rules the heavens. From July 22 to August 21, we are ruled by the Sun and the element of fire. It is a time to focus on not only physical strength, but also strength of heart, mind, and soul. By exploring and strengthening all of our aspects, we create the spark that enables us to embrace higher wisdom, take bold action and manifest as we meet this season of the bountiful harvest.

Our human ego-self is limited in vision and scope so it is important to remember that we can overcome this smallness. Summer is a time to release self-imposed limitations and to cast off the illusion of lack. Summer is represented by the element of fire which is purifying. Physical change is also a part of this active phase.

It’s the perfect time to explore and tap into feeling from our hearts and living from our higher selves. If we are to gain personal freedom, we must learn to understand and balance all our aspects so that through healing and growth we may become sovereign beings.

What does that mean? Many of us start on our healing path because we want to feel better, overcome trauma, or find more meaning in our lives. As we begin to explore our gifts, manage our energy, and stop focusing on our problems, we open up the space to start pondering the mysteries of the Divine. This is when we truly begin to awaken to our higher selves, tapping into the universal collective and innate wisdom.

Accessing our inner wisdom will allow us to move forward on our paths. Seeking to clear ourselves of limitations and negativity so that we may reflect benevolence can be done through the ongoing development of a deep understanding that reflects love, compassion, strength, and patience. Each of us is on an entirely unique path so this will look different for each person.

This present time is perfect for honoring ourselves through self-care, and not just the materialistic kind that you might read about in a pop-culture magazine. We need to authentically care for ourselves in all our many aspects and one way to approach this is to use The Wheel.

All indigenous cultures have used a form of The Medicine Wheel – traveling from one direction to the next, exploring all the facets of the human existence. The term medicine does not refer to medical matters, rather medicine represents the inherent life force found in all of nature. Travel occurs in the South, West, North, and East as we circle through the seasons and phases of life.

There are numerous variations of the medicine wheel, yet they all drive us to reflect on similar principles and ideas. As we journey through the wheel, we tend to all our aspects – physical, emotional spiritual, and mental. This allows us to honor ourselves by integrating all our aspects and to connect them with the present emphasis on manifestation during this time of the Lion’s Gate.

The Medicine Wheel

We begin to travel through the Wheel from the South, where we consider physical aspects. Self-care can take on the form of exercise, massage, diet, and other self-care modalities. Also be aware that the south represents manifestation. Tend to your finances, make lists of what needs to be done, make plans for your business, nourish your dreams, care for your living spaces and belongings, and give care to all areas of physicality in your life.

Next we travel to the West, the place of emotion. It is here where we watch for our inner cycles for understanding of the subtle tides that regulate the inner workings of self. When we take time to examine, understand, heal, and grow our emotional selves, it allows us to heal and grow in other areas of our lives as well.

Society often teaches us to block out our emotions or to dwell on negative emotions such as hate, jealousy, judgement, and greed. By examining and learning to direct your emotional health, you can make major changes in our life. Carefully select what media you consume and find time to connect with nature all year long. Eliminate anything that does not honor your sacred soul and embrace that which gives you joy, hope, courage, and confidence.

Take time to examine your emotions, seeking to clear out anything that feels less than benevolent. This often requires hard work and determination. You might decide to seek out a life coach, therapist, counselor, past life reader, tarot reader, energetic healer, or another professional who offers insight. Be sure to select someone who intuitively feels like a good fit. You might also seek out self-help books, videos, workshops, resources, and materials that resonate with you.

The North is the place of the spirit and connects to our soul’s journey. Every step we take is sacred and offers us the opportunity to learn and grow. Understanding that we are one with the universe and connected to every thing and every living being helps us to align with our higher selves and our life purpose.

Seeking out spiritual wisdom and experiences are a part of the north path. Deciphering the messages in our dreams, delving into a yoga practice, meditating, visiting an Energy Healer, and paying attention to the messages of the universe are a few of many ways to connect. Incorporating positive affirmations, creating inspiring spaces, working with the elementals, and spending time in nature are a few of many ways to connect with your spirit; we may assimilate elements from the other directions in developing our spirituality in the North. These are tools that help us to transform. Our goal is to find that place of stillness, where we are divinely connected. We absorb this energy and spread it out into the world, sharing our light.

And finally, we visit the East, the direction of the mind. Ancient wisdom allows us to create using wisdom, knowledge, and our mental abilities. The east is represented by the Eagle who flies high over the land with courage and swiftness. This represents an expansive view that offers great detail as well as an understanding of the overall picture. It signifies an awakening of the mind that represents our visionary selves. It is here that we learn about tools of personal alchemy and how we can harness the natural forces of the universe.

Working to reduce and eliminate mind chatter strengthens the mind and provides us with the freedom to be our authentic selves. Purposefully utilizing the mind is most helpful when you are first and foremost connected to your heart. Living through our heart and soul is the path to living a life of purpose. When we recognize this, we can then utilize the mind as a tool and understand its purpose.

Travelling through all the segments of the Wheel allows us to be more thorough in our self-care efforts and affords us greater opportunity to manifest at this potent time of year. The Wheel also represents peaceful interaction between all living beings on earth. This is a reflection of that which we wish to achieve within and without ourselves.

People have celebrated the cycle of life through circles and wheels throughout all of time. The wheel is an integral part of our spiritual heritage. As we grow, we change like the seasons as we pass through layers of the wheel, learning from each segment.

We live at the center of the wheel and we want to be in balance. We want to be at the center of knowledge and the rhythm of life. We often circle back around in layers to certain people and situations throughout our life, each cycle offering a lesson and an opportunity. It is your choice to take responsibility to face your fears, overcome your shadows, and to know that you have the power to heal yourself and set the course of your direction.

The sun has moved into the ruling sign of Leo which has cleared the way for the constellation of Sirius to rise up clearly without obstruction from the Sun, signifying completion and rebirth. Sirius is the brightest star in the Earth’s night sky and its name means “glowing” in Greek because it is so bright. It is also known as the “dog star” and is over twenty times brighter than our sun and is twice as massive.

A screen capture from an app called StarTrackerLite. This image is of the Sirius constellation captured on August 8, 2019.

Ancient artifacts indicate the great importance Sirius has held for humanity. Sirius is connected to divine creation and represents the feminine. It represents manifestation without ego. Sirius also represents an expanded consciousness that encompasses both physical and non-physical dimensions.

August is the eight month of the year and Eight represents progress, activity, and manifestation. Embrace these aspects now so that we can transition to the unconscious influences of autumn and then the silence of winter so that we may be nourished and prepare for the cycles as they meet us. Yet be mindful that there are many competing energies at this time and that you may feel less than energetic.

Allow yourself time for rest and relaxation so that you may regain your strength with ease after times of repose. Use times of energetic enthusiasm to address those things needing your attention in a more physically and mentally demanding way. Adjusting to the flow of life is like a river embracing the ever-changing land, moving with the seasons and varying conditions.

At this time of vitality, fullness, ripeness, and maturity, we prepare to move forward to a time of surrender, the autumn, where intuition and the unknown take over. The present is a powerful time to conquer our shadows and honor the divine as we grow and create. I invite you to take time to examine your aspects through the directions of the wheel, to care for yourself, and to embrace the manifestation of that which brings divine love and positive self-empowerment into your life at this auspicious time.

Ancient Trails and Equinox Stars: A Corridor of Light

The September Equinox Corridor of 2018

This week is a powerful time as we pass through the Harvest Full Moon and through the remainder of the equinox corridor (the days that follow the September 22 change of seasons).  We have been culminating wisdom and experiences over the spring and summer and now we come to a point where we reap the rewards of our struggles and efforts.

Many have experienced slow and difficult situations, often experiencing darkness and pain and/or large life changes. Clarity and understanding now allows us to leave behind all that which no longer serves our highest good. We are free to discard the old to release all that which is no longer in alignment. This creates new space and allows you to anchor in a higher vibrational state of being. This is the joy one achieves when their actions and beliefs are aligned and all the pieces of their life have integrity and love at it’s core.

Ancient Trails

I celebrated the Autumn Equinox by visiting the Sanilac Petroglyph Historic State Park in Michigan with a friend. The petroglyphs are a sacred location where the indigenous people of Michigan came together for an annual meeting. Various representatives from the tribes and bands would come together and share their knowledge, make plans, and hold discussions. Gathering from all points, they would share their harvest which included duck, pigeon, cranberries, and wild rice. The site is located along the trails that were used by the natives for hundreds of years.

The site was lost in the process of settlement and taken over by vegetation but a fire revealed the stone outcropping and now the land is protected. Tribal gatherings resumed in 2002. It is located in the “thumb” of Michigan in Sanilac County along the Cass River.

The Ancient Trail System of Michigan
Ebmodaakowet, the Archer at the Sanilac Petroglyphs site

The petroglyphs depict a variety of stories and wisdom including the famous image of the Archer, Ebmodaakowet, who is shooting knowledge into the future, seven generations ahead. We are now coming into that seventh generation, into a new age and it is time for us to unlock the wisdom that has been sent to us.

I especially feel a strong connection to the archer but also love the significance of the other images as well. The Eagle Man is Migizi Inini, who looks to the new day of the east, ensuring that people are following traditions and teachings. Mishibzhew, the water panther, protects the waters of the Great Lakes.

My friend and I honored those who came together on this land and held an Equinox Ceremony, each participating in our unique way while unifying our efforts. We honored the circle of life, the four directions, and our ancestors who brought us to this now moment. My focus was to work with the energies of the land, asking to unlock its ancient wisdom while imparting my intentions to forge unity and loving growth for humanity.

In ceremony I felt the immense and powerful love of our creator and the clarity of vision being offered to us. We are fully supported in these times of change. I was told to trust my intuition and know that I am on the right path. I also feel the increased connection with benevolent unseen energies. We are moving into a higher level and the light is shining on more truths for all to see, asking us to review our beliefs and to find new and better ways to lives our lives collectively.

My friend’s message encourages us to find interpretations that empower our personal stories. We cannot live life according to the needs and expectations of others. It is important that we write our own script and it should be one that empowers us the most, allowing us to be the hero. This does not mean we are egoic or enhancing the truth, rather this means that we choose to share our observations and experiences with empowering words that are loving and light filled.

A Lovingly Prepared Meal of Earthly Delights to Celebrate Equinox

It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed this beautiful land along the flowing Cass River (despite the mosquitoes). Afterwards we shared a delicious meal together and enjoyed conversation and a gentle breeze while listening to bird song.

The Anishnabe (Ojibwe) tribes would celebrate equinox from dawn till dusk. Prior to the ceremonies they would begin with purification in the sweat lodge. Celebrating the circle of life and the four directions is a reflection on the cycles of life. Nothing is linear as it may seem for we are continually living in the hoop of life.

Into the Light

In this Equinox corridor I have been aware of so much incoming light which provides powerful information to assist us. I have also been aware of shimmering multicolored DNA-shaped strands of light that have had an increased energy, very much like the feathered serpent. In Mesoamerican religions, the symbolism of this deity was one of duality. Being feathered represents a divine nature while the serpent represents a closeness to earth. We now know that this represents the duality of humanity integrating, an awakening of our DNA as we evolve into a higher state where we literally blend heaven and earth.

Light holds codes and information that help us to awaken our consciousness. The current energies are working on assisting our cellular body structures to remove all that which is not pure love. Trapped emotions and ideas live in the body and present themselves as pain. According to Lisa Brown, “I have a saying, where you hold back is your lack…. look and see where this applies for you. This is an “all in” experience and the higher we go, the more uncomfortable the old gets. Uniting is a VIBRATIONAL thing…. it’s an ENERGY thing… it’s a PURITY thing…. all of that old programming inside… this is what we all came to fully TRANSCEND FROM WITHIN.”

Through cleansing and releasing the density of the old we make room for our bodies to bring in that which is light so that we may enjoy the freedom and beauty of living on this beautiful planet Earth. This influx of light is greatly assisting those who are ready to release the layers of egoic self through confronting fears. Through this process we can embrace clarity and light which will help us to come back to our true soul path.

The Astrology of Change

The Milky Way Galaxy was birthed from the M87 Galaxy

The full moon and equinox are aligning with M87, which is the galaxy who originally birthed our Milky Way galaxy. This alignment represents useful insight and information for those who are ready.  This is “clarifying the role of humanity (and Earth) within a galactic and intergalactic framework” according to Graham Forscutt.

As my friend Kalia Diya said, “I can confirm that this is happening from my own perspective with what has been happening recently in the ethers, with massive waves, downloads, shifts, disclosure, exposure, magnetic recalibrations, “things” coming to the surface, not only through the layers of our Planet, but through the layers of collective consciousness” which very much expresses what I have been feeling and experiencing as well.

I have connected to the Archer at the Sanilac Petroglyphs Historic State Park since my visit in the summer of 2017. I believe that many ancient sites have been designed to align with the seasons and star systems and that finding an awareness of this information helps us to further understand the wisdom of the site.

At the exact time of the Autumn Equinox on Saturday and again while visiting the petroglyphs the following day, I used my star tracking app on my phone to determine where the archer was pointing in the heavens in relation to this particular petroglyph. Both times the constellation on the visible horizon has been Gemini.

Gemini is a mutable air sign and represents duality and communication. The twins are represented by the number two, which is also very relevant to the energies surrounding the equinox and full moon. Gemini springs from the earth to provide the ability to know and understand reality. While Aries stands for subject matter and Taurus for the object, Gemini represents the relationship between the two. This gives rise to knowledge itself. The opposite of Gemini is Sagittarius, the Archer, who seeks to provide context and meaning to the information that the twins wish to accumulate. Humanity is gaining knowledge at this time and we will soon be finding more context in relation to our findings, both personally and collectively.

The symbol for Gemini represents unity in addition to duality because of the way the twin pillars are bound together, connecting to heaven and earth.  In Egyptian astrology, the Gemini constellation was called the ‘Two Stars’ or ‘Pimahi,’ which means ‘the United.’ This is significant because we are moving into a time where humanity will unite. Despite the seeming division as portrayed in media, many are coming together to share their darkness so that they may move into the light as one.

The full moon today, Monday, September 24 will occur in the sign of Aries, a sign of fire and new beginnings. We are being invited to be who we truly are. While at the petroglyphs I received a message indicating that we need to believe in our dreams and live from our heart. It is also important to embrace and accept our emotions so that we may grow and move forward. We are truly being afforded a brand new beginning at this unique time. It shall be interesting to see how humanity proceeds forward.

The Harvest Full Moon in Aries invites Authentic Change

This full moon will highlight our inner shadows and rather than being afraid, we are only required to understand and let go. It’s important to trust ourselves, our intuition, and to be able to push off from the shore of safety and enter the flow of life.

Moving Forward

In summary, humanity is in a time like no other. As we move forward, we continue to release the dark and the pain to make space for the light and the new. I invite you to review the last six months and to glean wisdom and understanding from all that you have been through and overcome. Understand and release this information and know that it is now safe to move forward. With self-love and intent, find your power and move forward.

It is a time for us to receive information in a way that allows us to spark new beginnings. Disclosure is ongoing while at the same time new information is becoming available to help us to improve our lives. We can continue to believe and live in the old “truths” or we can rewrite our story. What we believe is what we live. At this equinox we celebrate our growth as we move into balance and harmony. It is a time of creation. What experience will you create?

The August Full Moon: Pausing before the Bright New Journey

The August full moon is called the “Blueberry Moon” by the Ojibwe or the “Moon When All Things Ripen” by the Dakota Sioux, which reflects our current phase very well. The August Full Moon in Pisces takes place on the 26th at 7:56 a.m. EST and offers us the chance to reflect and feel how far we have come in our lives. Take note of the painful moments and how you have grown and gained strength from them, your soul growing wiser. The past few months and especially the past few weeks have been very challenging for many, especially those working on the lower energies of the egoic self. There is nothing shameful or bad about this process because the experience is allowing us to develop an awareness. The current energies support us in graduating from past experiences and it is a time of culmination, completion, and manifestation.

This full moon is moving us from a place of dark introspection to a bright and blossoming place of creativity and light. It also signifies a new gateway opening after having been through three powerful eclipses and Lion’s Gate. We may cut the cords to suffering, wash away any sorrow, and move into a more loving state of being where we can surrender to love. We learn and grow the most during dark times and this recent phase was very much about reviewing and processing so that we could move forward. We were asked to look at our truths, to examine the inner depths of our hearts, and now we are being released from this corridor to move forward on our journey once again.

The Full Moon is a Time of Release and Growth

There is a grand trine occurring between the Sun, Uranus, and Saturn on this day as well which provides a foundation of strength, reliability, and all that is practical along with the emotional full moon. This is a time where we are being asked to receive, because we are a part of the universe, not because we are giving or doing something to earn it, but simply because it is our birthright as energetic beings. This is a time to honor and love our tender heart.  Self-love and love of all without resistance allows us to be present and live from the heart. The universe is asking us to find and remove barriers so that we may move forward with trust in divine order. We are divine beings and we are being reminded that we are not separate.

This beautiful Pisces full moon allows us to look at the path before us and to feel excited about our new journey. We will feel more aligned and stronger moving forward, filled with new hope. We are now free to leave attachments and expectations behind from all that has been processed.

We are in a transformative phase and working through the lower energies is going to be pivotal in our ability to move forward. To be able to heal, shift, and change in positive ways is to trust in the universe and in our hearts.  Patience has also been an important lesson for many this year. It is the cornerstone of all virtues and the more patient we become, the more we can live a joyful life in a loving state.

There will also be a romantic focus and many are releasing any resistance to commitment. Freedom may be created through a union and the realization can be quite liberating and exciting. Pisces represents unconditional love and shows us the way to opening our hearts.

The Sun entered the sign of Virgo on August 23 which means we are now in a phase in which we can transfer our creative desires into the physical. By bringing our visions into a tangible state and finding practical and logical ways to make our dreams and goals happen, this allows us to experience the fruition of our journey and provides a joyous yet realistic means to finally move forward.

This full moon is a soothing and provides us an opportunity to work on releasing that which no longer serves us. Let this powerfully beautiful new moon remind you how strong you are and that no matter what, you are loved, you are capable, and there is joyful path ahead. Remember you are an infinite spark of all creation. You are now set forth into a time of conscious creation and empowerment. It is truly a time of love and light.

Thinking Like a Mountain: Connecting to Gridwork

When I was nineteen years old I found a book called “Thinking Like a Mountain” and I truly loved that book. The internet had not quite arrived, so my options were different back then. My choices included brick-and-mortar bookstores, local and university libraries, esoteric shops, the occasional magazine from a far-away health food store, and specialty publications. This dictated my course of research and the level of access I had to new ideas and information.

Finding a gem of a book like “Thinking Like a Mountain” felt significant, relevant, and it was a relief because it offered me a connection in a world that was radically disconnected from its roots. I embodied the wisdom and joy of nature often, so I could easily put myself into the perspective of a lush mountain, a wise old tree, or a gliding snowy owl.

I connected with the land often. In my early twenties I would head out to my secret hiding space at the base of a gnarled old tree at the bank of a fast-moving river, intending to clear my energies and set aside sacred space, offering my positive intent to the universe in ceremony. I didn’t have a name for it, but it felt like it was in alignment with who I was. Little did I know I was doing gridwork.

Michigan Serenity – Awakening The Core

The advent of the internet has allowed my obsession with research to become far reaching, highly fine-tuned, and liberating. One thing always leads to another and this is the absolute beauty of evolution. My life evolved through a variety of periods, leading to a large variety of interests including ancient history, pre-history, esoteric knowledge, ancient wisdom, astronomy, astrology, physics, geometry, metaphysics, quantum physics, mythology, traditional arts, writing, art, music, animal sciences, geology, geography, gardening, and meteorology, to name a few.

When I was a young child, I connected to animals, not only in physical reality, but also in dreams and daydreams. I thought everyone could see my canine and woodland friends that were with me often. We especially loved exploring and playing outside together, talking to the trees and dancing in the rain, enjoying the rich scent of earth and the incredible joy found running through a field of wild and magical dandelions. As I began to grow up, I was told I had a good imagination and that no one else could see my friends. Slowly they disappeared as new activities and demands replaced them in “the real world”.

As I grew older I found deep connections to nature and the elemental world through other means. Whether digging into the fertile earth with my bare hands to tend a garden, gazing at twinkling stars, admiring glittery quartz in the sunshine, or flying on the back of jubilant horse across a shimmering green field in summer, I have always felt a deep reverence and love for nature.

Gaia and all her celestial companions have accompanied me in my dreams and visions, allowing me to visit and interact with numerous earthy landscapes and galactic locales. Some very spiritually significant experiences took place in dreams around the time of my early twenties, such as a dream in which I was in the wilderness in the Rocky Mountains at the banks of a flowing river. It was a glorious place, my canine companion at my side, calling in the wild animals. They arrived in pairs; fish, birds, bear, hawks, owls, caribou, elk, coyote, fox, eagles, crows, deer, moose, wolves, otters, beaver, skunk, horses, wild cats, and creatures of all types gathered around me, peaceful and in the spirit of full, loving cooperation to work together for a better world. Again, I had no idea I was doing grid work.

Life rolls forward, a dance of synchronicity, forever bringing me ever closer to that which lies deep within my heart. My love of sweet mother earth, my passion for ancient wisdom, and my love of science and metaphysics has moved me down a beautiful path which has culminated in my recognition that I have been doing gridwork all my life, and in past lives. My connection to energy, place, and intent have played a strong roll in my life.

Thinking Like a Mountain

About a year ago I came across an online video of a joyful woman, her eyes bright and full of life. She was smiling and laughing the most genuine laugh as she told us about her rich and meaningful experiences among the trees and mountains. She was traveling and talking about working with the energies of the earth. I was instantly riveted to this beautiful, easy, natural expression of service. I had met Katie IndiCrow.

A few months later I decided to take a beginning Gridwork class with Katie through IndiCrow Energetics. I learned a new language that helped me to describe how I had been interacting with energy and nature all those years. I developed innovative knowledge and techniques, finding a whole new level of connection as well as a new community to share with.

After the class ended I was thinking about taking the advanced gridwork class that Katie offered. I checked in with my higher self and immediately received an immediate and resounding “Yes! Do it!” It turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. I was already an energy worker and Reiki Master but adding the advanced Gridwork to my skill set brought me to an entirely new level of awareness and ability. I am so grateful to have this connection.

This book that I am sharing here is called Connecting In: Powering Up Ourselves and the Grids! and it’s written by my teacher and friend, Katie IndiCrow. It explains the ancient craft of gridwork and how we can learn to align, connect, and power up the energetic network that supports earth and our existence. Through this process we assist in the process of embodying love and affecting the energetic connections, working towards a cooperative state of love, compassion, and gratitude.

Through the act of intentionally raising the vibration and reconnecting to the grids, we are assisting in supporting change and the transition of earth through ascension. Together we work in teams, utilizing our collective wisdom, skills, and positive intent.

Katie IndiCrow states “The idea of managing the earth’s energy system and coming together in ceremony or around alignments is something that many people remember. The feeling they get the first time they act as an ascension anchor is familiar, loving, and close! This is because there have been times in our history where gathering at various sites and nodal points and/or coming together in collective action has been key to our survival.”

As a gridworker, I have grown a great deal, expanding into a more empowered version of my self. Through this daily practice I connect with life energy and I embody love and compassion. There are still life challenges, of course, but overall life has become “way nicer and more friendly” as Katie might say.

I invite you to connect to the energy of nature and feel how you connect with it. Katie is an advanced Gridwork teacher and has many valuable offerings. I also teach workshops and classes about aspects that are a part of gridwork.

Please let me know if you have any comments or questions, or want to learn more. I am so excited to hear about how you connected to what I have written here and how it relates to your own experiences.

In love and light,

Sonya
